Guided Self-Placement

Who should take Guided Self-Placement?

Guided self-placement is available for students who do not have a US-style 4.0 grade point average (GPA) scale transcript.

Students may not have high school transcripts because:

  • You did not attend high school
  • You did not complete high school
  • You did not attend high school in the United States
  • Your high school did not use a 4.0 GPA scale
  • You do not have access to your high school transcripts

If any of these descriptions fit your situation, your placement will be completed through the guided self-placement process. Please email [email protected] to request the guided self-placement.

What is Guided Self-Placement and how does it work?

Guided Self-Placement is now a supportive tool for students who do not have a U.S. high school transcript or who prefer extra guidance in choosing their courses.  

Through this process you will:

  1. Explore 17³Ô¹Ï's English, ESLL, and math options
  2. Reflect on your comfort with key skills
  3. Review sample problems
  4. Decide which course fits your goals.

The Math Guided Self-Placement can be taken as many times as needed, and English/ESLL Guided Self-Placement can be taken twice. Results post to your MyPortal within 48 hours. 

 

With AB 1705, students may enroll directly in transfer-level math and English courses.  The guided self-placement process remains available to help you make an informed, confident decision.

Math Guided Self-Placement

Choosing the right math course depends on your major and goals. Some pathways need just one course, others more.  Our Math Guided Self-Placement lets you:

 

  1. Explore 17³Ô¹Ï's math options
  2. Review sample questions and course material
  3. Reflect on your confidence level so you can pick the best starting point.

You will be able to see sample problems and switch between different math courses to review the content. The goal of guided self-placement is for you to decide what course is best for you based on your self-assessment. However, if you are still not sure which math course to choose, it is recommended to meet with a college counselor to help you decide.

The Guided Self-Placement for math may be taken as many times as you would like.

Language Arts: English/ESLL Guided Self-Placement

17³Ô¹Ï’s Language Arts Guided Self-Placement helps you choose between English composition (ENGLC1000) and English as a Second Language Learner courses.

Once a language arts pathway is determined, students will:

  • Explore English C1000 or ESLL courses offered at 17³Ô¹Ï
  • Review sample course materials and questions.
  • Reflect on your skills to decide which class feels right

You will be able to see sample material and switch between different courses and pathways to review the content.

The goal of guided self-placement is for you to decide what course is best for you based on your self-assessment. However, if you are still not sure which course to choose, counselors are always available to help.  You can contact them here meet with a college counselor to help you decide.

The Guided Self-Placement for Language Arts can be taken twice for your convenience.
